目的

本研究の目的は、シェーカー教徒の実際の生活や共同体の運営方法を復元するため、好適な文学作品や史料の翻訳と、それらに関連する一次資料の発見、調査を行い、それら成果を段階的に広く公開していくことである。また、本研究の独創的な点は、シェーカー教の「生活デザイン」を総体として研究の対象としていることである。本研究組織は建築史を専門とするメンバーによって構成されているが、必ずしもシェーカー教によってデザインされた建築や家具のみを研究対象とするのではない。そして本ゼミでは、シェーカー教の共同体がデザインした家具や道具、建築を、宗教としての教義や共同体の規律によって規定された生活と切り離さず、生活のなかの労働や仕事、食事、礼拝などと一体のものとして捉え研究を行うことを目的とした。さいごに、今後の建築・家族・共同体のあり方についてシェーカー教の生活とデザインの関係から考えることを長期的な目的としている。
内容
2018年度の研究では、文献や資料を対象とした翻訳研究、および現地調査研究を行った。このうち翻訳研究に関して、2018年度の翻訳研究はアメリカの著述家Janice Holt Gilesによりシェーカー教を題材として書かれた小説『The Believers』を対象に行った。本小説は全24章から構成されているが、2018年度3月31日の段階で16章までの翻訳研究が完了した。続いてアメリカ現地調査計画に関して、2018年度の現地調査研究は、アメリカ合衆国ケンタッキー州にある複数のシェーカーコミューン跡地（Shaker Museum Mount Lebanon、 Hancock Shaker Village、South Union Shaker Village、Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village）を対象地として行われた。本調査では対象地の建築物や周辺環境の実測調査を行なったほか、現地でしか手に入らない資料を入手した。
方法
本研究では、翻訳研究と現地調査研究の二つの手法を用いて研究が行われた。このうち翻訳研究に関しては、中谷研究室の各学生らによって作成された翻訳文に対して、ゼミ参加者全員による翻訳検討会議を行い、校正担当による文体の統一作業を経て翻訳案が確定された。なお翻訳作業と並行して、小説に登場する具体的な人名や地名に関する調査を行い、必要に応じて訳注の作成を行った。また現地調査に関しては、中谷研究室の学生および研究代表者からなる7名のチームで調査を行なった。本調査では調査対象地に存在するシェーカーコミューンの建築物および地質や地形に関して実測を用いて調査を行なったほか、現地のシェーカーコミューン研究者であるWilliam Black氏およびAaron Genton氏に対するヒアリングを通して、現地の資料の収集や現地研究者との関係構築を行なった。
結論・考察
2018年度に翻訳完了予定であった『The Believers』全24章のうち、第16章まで翻訳を完了した。翻訳の過程で、専門用語やアメリカの歴史・シェーカー教徒の歴史に関して、より理解を深める必要があると思われた用語は脚注をつける作業を行なった。また、2018年度9月には、修論生・卒論生を中心に、アメリカケンタッキー州のシェーカーコミュニティが存在した地域で、現地調査を行なった。現地では、翻訳対象文献である『The Believers』の作者のJanice Holt Giles（1905-1979）が小説を執筆した際に参照したと思われる一次資料の収集と二次資料の獲得を達成した。以上の活動を通し、シェーカー教徒の生活の様子や共同体の実態に関する研究の数少ない日本語資料として、本ゼミの目的である研究成果の書籍化に向けて、一次資料の綿密な調査を第20章までの翻訳と訳注の作成を今後も継続して行なっていく必要がある。

研究題目
Shakers had their definitive designs for their lifestyle, religious methods, tools and furnitures, and their architecture. Their designs have unique simplicity and are said to be the origin of Modernism, but the design is actually derived from materializing the lifestyle which came from strict practice of their religious doctrine. The purpose of this research is to not only translate the resources and documents of the said Shakerism but also conduct additional research needed to successfully execute the translation. Through this research, we are looking to add to the limited amount of document that is available in Japan, as well as discovering the true meaning of designs of Shakerism. We hope to get a hint of rethinking about how architecture, family, and community should be, by understanding Shakers through combining their lifestyle and their design.

The purpose of this research is to reconsider how architecture and community should be in the future by studying the relationship of Shaker design and lifestyle. With the world changing drastically over the past few decades, our life is expected to change completely in the near future. Our aim is to try to give a hint of how we can live through the research of groups such as Shakers who practiced their doctrine to the extreme.
This research consists of two primary methods: translation and field study. Translation of a novel 『The Believers』(1957) is currently under work. The author of this novel, Janice Holt Giles, wrote the novel with considerable research of primary documents and thus is a good starter of Shaker research in Japan. Translation of this novel as well as any additional documents needed to deepen the understanding of the novel. In addition to this translation, we have gone to field study in Kentucky in order to actually observe and take measurements of the remaining buildings in reflection to the planning of the entire community. The secondary objective of this field study was to develop connection with the local researchers as well as obtaining documents that we cannot get in Japan, both of which was accomplished.
The product of this research so far consists of two Master’s theses and two Bachelor these, which will be presented at the Architecture Conference this September.
